<p style="font-size: x-large;">The <strong>Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies Collection</strong> contains archival materials from the <strong>Robert T. Ramsay, Jr. Archival Center at Wabash College</strong> that document the activities, development, and history of the <a href="https://www.wabash.edu/mxibs/" title="Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies at Wabash College Website" target="_blank" style="font-size: x-large;"><strong>Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies (MXIBS)</strong> at Wabash College</a>. Contents include student publications—such as the <em>Afro-American Student Union Journal</em> (1969-1970), <em>Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies Journal</em> or <em>UJAMAA</em> (1970-1972), <em>Malcolm X Institute Newsletter</em> (1973-1992), and <em>X-Position</em> (2000-2011)—organizational and College records, documents, correspondence, and ephemera, circa 1969-2011.</p>

<p style="font-size: large;">In the summer of 2023, Wabash College student Jesse Hall [W 2025] completed a summer internship—funded through the College's <a href="https://www.wabash.edu/news/story/11699" target="_blank" title="Restoring Hope, Restoring Trust article" style="font-size: large;"><em>Restoring Hope, Restoring Trust</em></a> project sponsored by the Lilly Endowment's <em>Chartering the Future for Indiana's Colleges and Universities</em> grant program—managed by the Robert T. Ramsay, Jr. Archival Center. He researched the history of the MXIBS, scanned select documents and all MXIBS publications, and created and compiled metadata on the digitized materials.</p>
<p style="font-size: large;">With continued support from the Ramsay Archival Center, this digital collection will continue to grow with information being added and updated over time. <h1>History of MXIBS</h1>
<p style="font-size: large;"><strong>In 1970, several Black students at Wabash College</strong> with the support of faculty and administrators <strong>founded the Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies (MXIBS)</strong>. This effort brought together the student-run Afro-American Student Union (founded circa 1967) and members of the Afro-American House (operated circa 1968-1970), creating one organization on campus to culturally and academically support Black students. The Institute’s founding coincided with the establishment of the College’s Afro-American Studies program (now known as Black Studies) in 1969.</p>
<p style="font-size: large;"><strong>The College first housed the Institute in a residence at 416 West Wabash Avenue </strong>directly opposite the entrance to the campus mall. The building provided Black students with dedicated space for social gatherings and educational events during a time that there were still segregated fraternities on campus. From these early years, the MXIBS has hosted scholars and brought several speakers and events to the College and the Crawfordsville community, and the students published a journal and newsletter.</p>
<p style="font-size: large;">Open to all, <strong>the MXIBS celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020 </strong> and serves as a cultural center for Black students and students of color, educating the community on Black history and culture. In 2002, the College dedicated a new building on Crawford Street behind the Lilly Library that includes social and study spaces, a classroom, offices, and a library.</p>
